Also, there most likely will not be a Dec 26th. In other news, our first ever year-end awards ballot will most likely be sent out to reader next week, so keep your eyes open for that. The Greater Midwest BJJ/Sub.Wrestling Championships

11/10 Brooklyn Center, MN at the Earle Brown Heritage Center - Carriage Hall

The Greater Midwest Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu/Submission Wrestling Championships lived up to its claim to be the "best run grappling tournament in the Midwest." A total of 54 competitors from around Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Missouri, and California were treated to a smoothly run, fairly refereed and competitive tournament, sponsored by Zebra Mats. The tournament started out with the Kid’s division (all coming from Minnesota Martial Arts Academy) and ended with a very technical, continual moving Super Match, between an awesome BJJ/Submission fighter in Chris Brennan Chris and Sean Sherk, the explosive wrestler/submission fighter. To the surprise of all, Brennan stuffed Sean explosive takedowns, then jumped to the guard where he attacked continually. Sean attempted to pass but was not able to get around Chris’ seasoned guard. Chris went for guillotines, Kimura’s and a Triangle but was unable to trap Sean in anything. The only points of the matched happened when Chris attempted to take Sean’s back and was taken to his back by a double leg. The final of the 10-minute Submission match was 2-0 in favor of Sean Sherk, maintaining an undefeated record.

Throughout the tournament spectators were given many technical matches to watch. A few stand out matches were the Ishmael Bentley (MMAA) vs. Randy Erdman (Team Menne) rematch. In a past tournament, these two battled for 15 minutes with win going to Bentley on a controversial straight arm from guard. This time Randy started the points out by taking Bentley down; Bentley worked his impressive guard finally securing an arm bar for the win. In another rematch, Caio Malta crossed paths for the third time with Greg Wikan (Team Menne). Caio a BJJ Purple Belt under Gadoi/Macaco and training at the MMAA met Greg Wikan (Danger Zone, Extreme Challenge, Rings USA veteran) in the Finals of the Super Heavyweight Submission Wrestling division. Greg Wikan down to 217 pounds battled a 245 pound Caio. These two have each submitted each other in previous matches, so this was the best two out of three match. The match started with Greg taking Caio down. Caio worked from the guard going for a Triangle straight arm, with Greg countering. Caio got a reversal for two, then mounted for 4, then later got knee mount for 2 more. In the end Greg went to all fours and Caio sunk in a rear choke and Wikan had to tap. I’m sure these two will meet again.

Special guest, 5th degree Black Professor Pedro Sauer, refereed the finals of the advanced and absolute divisions. In addition, the Minnesota Martial Arts Academy hosted a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar with Professor Sauer, who went over technical details and improvements on the things he saw throughout the tournament. Thanks you to all who supported the first of many Greater Midwest BJJ/Submission Wrestling Championships. Look for another bigger and better "A class" tournament in the spring.

News and Notes

*************

There was a story in the Tuesday edition of the St Paul Pioneer Press about the ordinance in West St. Paul, Minnesota, trying to ban Ultimate Fighting. You can read the story at: http://www.pioneerplanet.com/news/mtc_docs/183113.htm

The ban was voted down 4-3 according to local promoter Brad Kohler. The ban was voted down 4-3 according to local promoter Brad Kohler. While this is good news, the actual effects of the vote are unknown at this time. Kohler's next show is set to take place in Fridley, MN in two weeks, so the ban wouldn't have effected any upcoming plans. But in a liberal state like Minnesota, one ban would have lead to a cascade of others, and I still believe that should the crowds ever top 1000 people, there will be a motion to ban the sport state wide. Honestly, I was more than a little surprised this one didn't pass in the first place. If anything else comes of this, we will let you know.

Stephen Quadros submitted this a few weeks back and I completely forgot to run it. (Sorry SQ) This magazine looks like it could be awesome, so check it out when it is on a news stand near you:

Black Belt Presents FIGHTSPORT: With Stephen Quadros

It's official! Black Belt Communications (publishers of Black Belt magazine) has announced it is launching a newsstand magazine which concentrates exclusively on the fighting sports. Longtime Black Belt contributing editor and columnist STEPHEN QUADROS has been chosen as editor for the new endeavor. "I am thrilled to accept this position and once again step into the forefront of the wild world of printed materials. (From 1993 to 1999 Quadros was editor in chief of the now defunct Kickboxing Ring Report magazine and website). I intend to make this magazine the standard for our industry. It will be aimed squarely at the general public and will feature some of the more interesting personalities around the martial art sports as well as coverage on the big events like K-1, UFC and Pride. Plus there will be a heavy selection of ring girl coverage and backstage content. It's going to be a little different from the usual status quo. Expect to actually have fun when you read it!" Named after his popular column in Black Belt magazine which Mr. Quadros penned for nearly three years, the new publication will be titled, "FIGHTSPORT With Stephen Quadros." Fightsport will hit national newsstands at the beginning of February 2002. "Fightsport will be published quarterly (every 3 months) the first year, bi-monthly the second year (2003) and then monthly the third year (2004). Get ready because this is going to rock!" states the irrespessible Stephen Quadros. Black Belt will also soon launch a supporting website at the address: www.FightsportMag.com

We ran the wrong date for the Pedro Sauer seminar at the the Lehigh Valley Martial Arts Academy. The date is actually January 18 & 19, 2002 from 10:00AM to 1:00PM. Sorry for any misunderstanding.
